NEW ORLEANS – On the heels of a successful partnership with Mayo Clinic at Operation Blessing’s Medical Recovery Week earlier this year, volunteers from the prestigious Minnesota clinic are once again making the rounds with OBI.

In August, Mayo made a five-month commitment to send a team of doctors, nurses and medical assistants to volunteer at OBI’s medical clinic in New Orleans.

"This is a volunteer collaboration," said Dr. Steve Adamson, chair of the department of family medicine at Mayo Clinic at Rochester. "We bring excellent medical care to the table and Operation Blessing has all the logistics worked out. Together we can help a lot of people."

Mayo, a not-for-profit medical center, is not only known for its education, medical research and treatment of complex medical problems, but they were also ranked the second best hospital in America this year by U.S. News & World Report.

"We are looking to do more where there is a high humanitarian importance and impact in the community and this was a perfect fit for our team," said Walt Franz, a family doctor with Mayo.

Since April 2006, Operation Blessing’s expanded medical and dental clinics have treated more than 32,000 patients and filled more than 74,000 prescriptions..

Since April 3, 2006, Operation Blessing’s expanded medical and dental clinics have been making an impact on New Orleans’ devastated health care system by providing free medical care to more than 32,000 patients and filling more than 74,000 prescriptions.

Of the clinic’s chronically-ill patients, roughly half are treated for high blood pressure, while approximately one fourth suffer from diabetes.

"Our experience at the clinic has been terrific from every aspect and the wonderful patients from New Orleans have made the effort even more special," Dr. Adamson said. "Operation Blessing is a class act and a national treasure and I am taking additional measures to see that the relationship we have with OBI strengthens."
