Cutting Away Poverty
Timisoara, Romania -- Clean and tidy, they quietly filed into church next to their mother. Ranging in ages from three to fifteen, the seven Utiu children where known to be hardworking and faithful. It was also known that the family lived off of a sparse government allocation while their alcoholic father beat his children and wife. An additional problem loomed over them as a new school year was approaching. Unless someone helped, school requirements would go unmet and the children would not be able to attend classes.
Concerned for the Utiu children and hearing about Operation Blessing Romania's Back-To-School program, a church friend approached center leaders Liviu and Mariana Neagoe. An Operation Blessing team soon visited the Utiu family. Thanks to Operation Blessing partners like you, all of the school-aged children received the desperately needed and required school supplies, shoes, and clothes. Without these gifts, they would have had to wear summer sandals in the cold winter months! Their mother expressed thanks to God for supplying their needs.
During BTS 2001, Operation Blessing Romania worked with its network of partnering organizations in assisting 1,100 students living in numerous poor villages and in orphanages surrounding Romania's western city of Timisoara with required school supplies. In addition, shoes and clothing items were distributed to 420 of the neediest children.
"Back-To-School has a great impact upon large Romanian families," shared a reflective Liviu. "Without it, parents often times reach the point of not being able to send their children to school."
