A Beggar’s Daughter Dreams of School

One glance at the sad and unkempt man crouching by the subway entrance told strangers he was begging. But did anyone really care about his situation? Many assumed he was on the bottle or a drug addict ready for his next fix. But that was not the case at all. This Chinese man happened to be Meiyun’s father, willing to do anything so his daughter could have another day to live.

Meiyun, 15, hoped to continue her education after middle school. However, school tuition fees threatened to dash her dreams. Over the years things had gone from bad to worse for her family. After a farming accident, her proud father was left handicapped. Meiyun’s mother abandoned them soon after, and her father had to support the family by begging. Her grandparents also began working part-time. Even with all three adults combining their very small incomes, there wasn’t anything left after paying for basic living expenses.

It was January and the next school term began March 1st. In the middle of her family’s desperate situation, Meiyun held onto her dream. A representative from Operation Blessing Beijing learned of the teen’s need. Soon Meiyun and her family were overwhelmed with gratitude. She had been awarded a full scholarship for the next term!

Meiyun’s father continues to support his family by collecting strangers’ leftover change. But somehow knowing his beloved daughter’s dream to continue school has been answered makes the day go by easier.
