Time for school!

In Philadelphia at the Lights of the World after
school program, homework time is a vital daily activity.

OBI provided computers for the young people
in Philadelphia to use in their studies.

Across the nation, thousands of children from struggling
families would begin the new school year without even
the most basic supplies – from pens and pencils
to a new pair of shoes – if it wasn’t for
the work of OBI.
More than 790,000 at-risk students
in the U.S. have received the supplies they need to start
the school year better equipped to learn and excel.
But Operation Blessing is constantly looking for new
and innovative ways to positively impact children’s
futures. So, instead of only reaching students once a
year, OBI is now working toward year-around involvement.
New program plans emphasize ongoing instruction and
testing at OBI centers across the nation. Many have after
school programs already in place, such as OBI partner
ministry Lights of the World in Philadelphia.
“After the program started back a year ago, we
were constantly asking what we could do to make it better,” said
Stephanie DeCosta, an integral leader of the program. “Programs
like this need strong academic enrichment to make them
truly work.”
The first through eight graders involved are now tested
regularly in a variety of academic areas. Leaders identify
strengths and weaknesses, and added assistance is given
whenever necessary.
At model OBI centers like Philadelphia, academic enrichment
programs have also expanded to include the entire family.
Adult classes such as computer training, GED completion
and financial management leave a lasting impact on individuals,
families and the community.
