Wisconsin WINGS Classes Continue To Take Off

Donned with professional looking clothes, she shyly slipped into class not wanting to be noticed. In her mid 50's, this student was ready to soak in everything that WINGS teacher's Mike and Gary had prepared to share during the week long life skills class.

With the children grown, Shirley wasn't willing to stay in a unhealthy marriage anymore, but was scared of having to provide for herself. In the past, she had only kept a couple of side jobs here and there. After seeing a news segment on the Milwaukee Outreach Center's WINGS classes, she decided to make a fresh start.

When the week was complete, Shirley not only had learned various life skills and work ethics, but also received enough support and confidence from her classmates to become employable. "She had come in here looking drawn, but gradually showed us her outgoing side," Gary commented. After successfully completing an additional computer training class, Shirley began working for an airline. Now almost one year after graduating from WINGS, she comes in as a guest speaker, encouraging present students to follow their dreams and desires.

The Milwaukee Outreach Center began as an official WINGS center in April 1999. Since, more than 150 students have received their certificate and gone into the workplace with determination. The program is not just for welfare recipients, but crosses economic lines. "We are impacting the down and upper," expresses both Mike and Gary, " not just the down and out.

Not only does The Milwaukee Outreach Center hold WINGS classes in their facility, but they launched a WINGS program in a local prison this past October! Find out how this exciting twist has already impacted lives next week!
