Free Groceries Help Single Mom Succeed
The flickering lights finally gave up and left the family sitting in darkness. It wasn’t
as simple as changing a bulb. Sharon couldn’t afford to pay the electric bill. This
wasn’t the first time their utilities had been shut off. She struggled to buy enough
groceries for the family as well. Food stamps didn’t go far enough to keep three
hungry boys fed. Her husband abandoned the family several years ago, leaving Sharon the
sole provider for the couple’s sons. Sitting in the darkness, the single mother
determined to provide them a promising future – somehow.
It was with this goal in mind that Sharon sought help from Graves County Mayfield
Mission (GCMM). The mission serves women and children who are in distress. It is
part of Operation Blessing’s food distribution network in Murray, Kentucky. Our
Hunger Strike Force trucks drop off donated food and relief supplies to regional partner
In His Steps, and then they distribute the truck’s contents to local relief
agencies like GCMM.
Sharon was soon put on the recipient list and gratefully began regularly receiving
groceries. She didn’t have to worry about how she was going to feed her children
anymore! Not only did Sharon show her gratitude by volunteering at GCMM and her sons’
school, she pursued education and self-improvement. Recently, Sharon received her food
handling certification which will allow her to become self-sufficient.
Sharon’s family represents tens of thousands of other hungry American households
we have helped since 1992. Hunger is still real here in America. Job loss, medical emergencies
and other unexpected tragedies put thousands of families in poverty every month –
wondering where their next meal will come from. You’re helping us change that!
Your support is helping weave a safety net of caring ministries across the country to
provide food and support to neighbors in dire need! With your help, we can reach out
to thousands of new families each month that need support while they get back on their
feet.
Your gift of $25 or more can help a family of four eat for a month.
