French-speaking
Africa is comprised of numerous intriguing and unique people groups. Although rich
in heritage, countless live in remote areas relying on what little the dry earth offers.
Many are without access to clean water or basic medical care.
Operation Blessing sponsored programs are giving those who are living a hand-to-mouth
existence the opportunity to lead healthier and more fulfilling
lives by:
- Tending the Sick -- Teams have distributed life-saving anti-parasite medicine
to people living in over half of the countries in French-speaking Africa.
- Providing Relief --
a. Disaster Relief: As demonstrated during the 2005 floods in Senegal, an effective assortment
of talents and resources are utilized to quickly help meet the variety of emergency relief
and recovery needs that are found in the aftermath of a disaster (i.e. flood, earthquake,
manmade, fire).
b. Hunger Relief: Teams coordinate food distributions, giving thousands of
tons of relief to affected areas during emergency famine situations like that of
Niger and Burkina Faso in 2005.
- Equipping for Life -- Operation Blessing assists
people needing to break free from the vicious cycle of poverty through various
micro-enterprise projects.
a. Fish Farm Project: OBI built a self-sustaining fish pond in a poor Senegalese
village. An existing pond was stocked with 5,000 tilapia and the care-takers
were supplied with fish food. Equipped with
a set of scales and a large net villagers are able to weigh and sell their catch.
b. Garden Project: Women who have found themselves without a way to support
their families are given an opportunity to learn how to garden. Utilizing this
knowledge, as well as given a shared plot of land and access to a clean water well,
they are able to harvest and sell vegetables as well as feed their children. Projects
are running in Burkina Faso and Senegal.
c. Living Waters: In efforts to provide clean water throughout the region, existing
water sources are repaired and new wells are dug. Countries benefiting from this
project include Cameroon, Benin, Burkina Faso and Senegal.
d. Sewing Centers:
Women from impoverished households learn the marketable skill of sewing and sell items
like clothing and tablecloths. Centers are teaching students in Cote d'Ivoire, Mali
and Senegal.
